CLAWS is the acronym for "Cooper Landing Academy and Weapons School". CLAWS was created in 2003 to addresss the need for combat rifle and pistol training for citizens and Law Enforcement personnel involved in Homeland Security. The armed citizen is the best defense against armed attack by terrorists and other criminals. However, there is more to defending against terrorists and criminals than owning a weapon. Every legal gun owner in America needs to be trained in the use of their particular weapon(s). CLAWS helps by taking traditional and current Law Enforcement training, mixing it with current military training, and developing a well rounded "specialist". These "specialists" are trained in all facets of "SWAT"(Special Weapons and Tactics), which is now called "SRT" (Special Response Team). In our case the name change was fitting because fully automatic weapons are not usually available to the average citizen. Most participants own a handgun and a rifle. We recommend a 1911 .45 CAL or 9mm semi-auto pistol, and a semi-auto rifle of the AR-15 or M1A configuration in calibers .223 or .308.
Urban warfare, sniper, and combat training is part of the training. This includes "stacking" and shooting on the move, building entry, operating checkpoints and roadblocks. Constitutional Law, particularly the 4th, 5th, 6th and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution is emphasized at each training exercise.
Alaska is a State that is isolated from the Lower 48 and has a vast land mass much larger than even Texas. With a total population of only around 600,000, every able bodied woman and man should be able to protect their family and themselves from harm. CLAWS offers that opportunity for anyone West of Anchorage.
Instructors are highly skilled and qualified to conduct the training. They include current and past Law Enforcement officers. Local Police Officers and Alaska State Troopers have attended these courses and also have provided specialized training in some cases.
